Dimensions & care

Full dimensions are listed at the end of the Overview on every product page, taken from the finished piece rather than from a drawing. If a measurement matters for your space, write to us and we will check the actual item before it ships.

Care instructions ship with the product and are printed on the care label where there is one. Solid wood wants a damp cloth and an occasional oil; stone should be sealed once a year; wool and linen prefer a cold wash and drying flat.

Shipping & returns

Shipping is free on every order, with tracking, anywhere in the United States. We do not ship outside the US, so there are no customs charges or import duties on anything you order.

Orders are processed in 1 to 2 business days and most orders placed before 2pm ET leave the same day. Typical delivery is 7 to 15 days from dispatch. Tracking arrives by email as soon as the carrier scans the parcel.

Thirty days to return anything unused and in its original packaging, with all fixings included. We cover the return shipping when an item is faulty, damaged or not what you ordered. If a piece arrives damaged, send a photo of the item and the outer box within 7 days and we ship a replacement without asking for the broken one back.

A door on a hinge, so you can light it without burning your knuckles

Matte black steel and clear glass, eight inches square and sixteen high, sized to a three-inch pillar candle — with a side door rather than a lid you have to lift off while holding a match.

THE DOOR

Having a hand free is the whole difference

Lanterns with a lift-off top ask you to hold the glass, the lid and a lit match at the same time, usually in a breeze. This one opens at the side on a hinge: open, light, close. It sounds like a small thing until you have tried the other way on a windy terrace.

PROPORTION

Eight inches square, sixteen high

That is enough internal volume for a three-inch pillar to burn cleanly without scorching a panel, and enough height to sit on a table without blocking the face of the person across from you. The glass is clear, so the flame does all the work.

WHERE IT GOES

Branch, step, or the middle of the table

The loop handle takes a hook, so it hangs off a low branch or a shepherd's crook as easily as it stands on a stair. Powder coated steel handles dew and rain. Wipe the inside of a panel when soot starts to build.

The side door is the whole thing

I have burned my hand on lift-off lanterns before. Open the hinged door, light the pillar, shut it. I did it one-handed in a stiff breeze last weekend and nothing blew out.

Lovely, but wipe the glass

Sixteen inches tall means it does not block the person across the table, and a 3 inch pillar sits in there with room around it. Soot does build on the inside of one panel, so it needs a wipe every few burns.

Questions we get about this kind of piece

All FAQs
Can it stay outside all year?

Powder-coated metal and teak handle a full season outdoors without complaint. Through winter, cover the piece or bring the lighter items and cushions inside. What each piece is rated for is on its page.

Will teak go grey?

Yes, and that is normal. Untreated teak weathers to a silver-grey within a season without losing any strength — the colour change is on the surface. Oil it once or twice a season if you would rather keep the honey tone.

Are the outdoor lights safe in rain?

Anything listed for outdoor use is rated for it and the rating is on the page. Solar and battery pieces need no wiring at all; anything that plugs in needs an outdoor-rated socket, not an extension run out through a window.

What happens to cushions if they get wet?

The fabric is water-resistant, not waterproof. A shower runs off and they dry quickly, but a cushion put away damp will mildew from the inside out. Stand them on edge to dry before storing.
